    yoga morning

As per every Calalla trip we have been doing Banksie Bootcamp. We've d0ne this 2 try & stop the kids seizing up in the long break.

This year weve been training down at the beach, which the kids love! Mandy & I were in hysterics at the th0ught of what people walking past were thinking! Here were 2 fat mamas sitting on a bo0gie board whist screaming at the children 2 'drop & give me 20!'

They sprinted on the beach, they lunged down in2 the water, they starjumped in the shallows & rolled down in2 the water!

Monday we worked on a different tact! I had br0ught d0wn a freebie yoga dvd that i got in the newspaper a year ago.

It was gorgeous 2 see the 5 children take it all so seri0usly, n0t a giggle am0ngst them (cept 4 me who th0ught the term 'corpse pose' was funny!)

They did it all so well & con was excited when i told him we'd do it again 2mrw morn! He th0ught he was so flexible after he was d0ne!

    Mounties Carnival

The Sunday before Christmas saw us up at the free Xmas carnival run by the local club. It's always a fun time, albiet stressfull as there are always issues, with people, or the ride operators etc. This year was no exception!.

But in saying that - its a fun time and the kids love it. We try to get there at the start of it so that by 11ish we can head home and the kids have been on lots of rides, and not too many long queues.

Ceilidh wasn't with us this year, she had gone down to Easts Beach with Greer and family for 72 hours - a little camping holiday for her! Lucky girl! So, with CJs ticket we took Brodie. Plus Sal and Sam  joined us there too!!

    Oh Come All Ye Faithful...

    And Rejoice!!!
Last night was Christmas Children's Mass which was very lovely... The kids got to sit up the front and watch the gospel and then Fr Sebastian had all the children come up around him on the Altar whilst he did the Eucharistic Prayer. IT was so beautiful!

Then Nanna Beau came over and stayed the night... The didnt stop chatting and bouncing off her!! They got their sacks out ready for them to be filled!!!!
And we read the letters from Santa - they couuldn't believe they were at the top of the 'Nice' list!!!

    We woke up this morning

    6 degrees of separation.

A few weeks ago Ceilidh arrived at Highland lessons and Carolyn said to me ' I've got something funny to tell you.' Carolyn works for a bakery, in the office section. This bakery does ALOT of gingerbread orders.

A woman came in to pick up an order for a friend. This woman didnt make the order, she just offered to pick it up because she lived near there.

Whilst they were waiting for it to be sorted Carolyn made small talk. The woman said she was a teacher. C said 'where?' The woman said 'oh, a little Christian school out at Prestons.' C waited and said 'oh, what's it called' The woman said 'William Carey'. Carolyn said 'Oh, I know a little girl who used to go there!' and said CJs name. The lady said 'SHE WAS IN MY CLASS WHEN SHE LEFT!!'

She then said 'She went to Germany for her Auntys wedding and she brought me back a little german teddy bear. I only found it the other day, and thought of Ceilidh.'

She then wrote CJ a wee note and gave it to Carolyn..

    All Concert-ed out!!

The kids and I have had a very concert-y Christmas this year! As well as seeing Carols - a professional concert, we have also been to Hallorans concert to see Brodie, Jacob and Noah strut their stuff - they were WONDERFUL!!!

We went down to the Gong last weekend and saw Tayla and Katie at their new dancing school concert!! It was really lovely.

And then Saturday and Sunday it was Toa's Time! We saw Leilani and Kaiesha's concert on Saturday, and then Kaiesha's ballet concert on Sunday (where I caught up with my friend, Tristan, whose daughter used to dance with CJ.) They were beautiful!

It was wonderful to see all my friends children up on that stage and so happy and excited!

    I love concert time!!!

    Carols By Candlelight

Carols in the Domain is one of the biggest Carols in Australia - I guess the only one more prestigious is Melbourne Carols on Xmas Eve.

I haven't been into Carols since we took Casey as about a 10 year old!

On Thursday Mark rang to say he had won a VIP pass through work. The BTG (which is part of NPWS) get given x number of freebies per year and it was a 'first in first served' with emails as to who received them. Mark happened to be working on the computers when the email came through -so he was lucky.

Lucky is an understatement. Our seats were - I kid you not - 10m from the stage. We could see EVERYTHING!! The kids (and Mark and I) had a marvellous time watching the Wiggles, Charlie from Hi-5, Guy Sebastian, Delta and Brian and a plethora of others!!!

    Thought to ponder....

"It's my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child's life miserable or joyful. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humour, hurt or heal. In all situations it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated, and a child humanised or de-humanised"

Preschool Concert - NUTTIN FOR XMAS!!!

Yesterday was DeeDee's Preschool Concert and Carnival. She was very exicted about it all. She has been practising her songs every day - including one that says 'Im getting Nuttin for Christmas - which is one of her favourites!

She had a lovely time and sang and boogied her little heart out! She got to meet Santa and have a little talk...

Then she played with all her friends at the carnvial and got lots of rides on the cars and teacups and jumping castle.

This morning, in the car she was being a brat. Ceilidh was trying to tell me a story and Darcy was screaming her head off because she wasn't able to sing her song. I said to her "You keep that up and you will be getting NUTTIN for Christmas, you know what 'nuttin' means Darcy - that means 'NOTHING.' In her angry voice she says 'no Mummy -YOURE WRONG!! Nuttin means you get NUTS!!' OMG - I laughed SOOO HARD!!!! I had to ring mum straight away and tell her!!!

Same Bat Time Same Bat Number...

I remember last year, being overwhelmed by the great fortnight before Christmas. Fantastic results from dancing and from school.

Well this year, thankfully, is a repeat of that again!!!

Yesterday was the children's talent quest at school. Initially Ceilidh was going to do the Hornpipe. I said to her 'rather than do Scottish this year, why don't you do one of the concert dances.' She - of course - chose Tap. She LOVES her tap!! She wanted to do Rocking Robin. I understood why. It was a fun dance and she knew it very well. However, her other tap was to Disturbia. With it being a popular song, and knowing the kids would sing along, I convienced her to do that. She wore the MY PEOPLE black and white stripey outfit for it.

Connor wanted to do Disco Duck. Even though it's not finished, even though he doesn't know it well - that's what he wanted to do.I tried to convience him to do Cotton Eye Joe - but didnt succeed.

They both got up their by themselves and ROCKED! Most of the kids in the talent quest were groups. Only a few solos.

Well - Ceilidh WON!!!! She (and we - mum, dad and me) were so shocked but so excited!!! It was WONDERFUL!!!

Connor got 3rd too!! That was a big shock. I dont think he should have gotten anything.

SO - very very happy excited wee ones in the Griffo household!! So glad all the Dancing $$$$ are paying off!!! ;D

And I'm so very proud. They got up there in front of about 600 of their peers and they ROCKED!!!!

Trimming the Tree... Decking the Hall...

Bah humbug that I am - I told the kids that we weren't putting the tree up until the house was clean!! Well, after the studio exams it was/is -- clean-ISH so last night I relented

    They were soooo excited!!!

    SO PROUD OF MY KIDS!!!!!

    School reports came home yesterday.

WOW! WOW! WOW! They both did soooo well!!!! I am so very very very happy!! Not only on the academic side but on the effort side as well!!!
Remembering that a C is the average, a B high and an A outstanding...

    CEILIDH Year 4

    2 B's and a C in English with a 'HIGH' for effort
    5 B's and a C for Maths with a "HIGH" for effort
Outstanding for ICT (Industrial Computer Technology)
    Very High for Science
Very High for HSIE (Social Studies)
    High for PE
    High for Creative Arts
Plus she got 'Always' for very one of her 'Social development and commitment for learning' except for Completes homework and Strives to produce neat work - which che got 'Usually'

Her General Comment was - Ceilidh is a steadfast, conscientious worker who is consolidating her knowledge and making steady progress, particularly in Mathematics. She is to be commended for excellent work habits and participates actively in class discussions. Ceilidh particularly enjoys creative arts and dancing. She shows a positive attitude and willingness to use class time wisely and takes pride in work well done!

HOW FANTASTIC IS THAT!!!!! She has settled in so very well!! I am sooooo glad I changed her over!!!!! :)

    CONNOR
    English 1 A (!) 1 B and 1 C with an overall High for effort
    Maths - 4 A's (OMG!) 1 B and 1 C with a Very High for effort
    ICT - High
    Science - Very High
    HSIE  - Very High
    PE - High
    Creative Arts - Very High
3 Always' in the Social Development with the rest 'Usually'

His teachers comment wasn't as good. But Im not surprised. We all know he is a chatterbox who can't keep still -and he was in the 1/2 composite where there were some kids who were over 2 years older than him. I think Miss A forgot sometimes that he was only 6 and a half.

Anyway, she said ' Connor has made steady academic progress this year, however this could have been furthered if he had focused more on completing class work. Despite this, his work is always of a good standard and is beginning to present neatly. Pleasingly, he has shown improvement in his willingness to attempt new work and a more positive attitude towards learning. Connor will need to grow in maturity if he is to have a successful year in Year Two. He has been a pleasure to teach.

So - other than the 2nd last sentence that had me a bit riled - it's an awesome report!! :D :D :D

    concerned

I seem to have picked up a virus on MSN. I rarely use the instant chat, really only for Casey. But the other day it said there was a msg from my friend, Sally (Sim) saying to go and look at pictures from her Christmas party. Knowing that Sal is a real party animal - I did. But it was fake and stupid me fell for it.

Since then it keeps sending out nasty worms to my contacts (SO BIT APOLOGIES IF YOU HAVE RECEIVED ONE FROM ME). And it keeps booting me off my msn (that's when I know it's sent another nasty out.)

Seeings as this  'windows live' is all attached to it - I am worried that somehow it's all been hacked into as well. Imagine if I lost my blog - OMG OMG OMG.............

If anyone knows what I can do to get rid of the virus please let me know!!!

    My sore feet...

My feet have been getting worse and worse the last few months. Particularily my heels and arches. In the mornings, or after lying down with my feet up - I am in the most excruciating pain when I stand on them. To the point that I can't actually walk for about 3 or 4 minutes.

They are constantly in pain, it is just the severity that varies. Of course, I have done nothing about this, not seen anyone as I am a woos.

However, I am very concerned as to how I am going to teach two 2 days workshops in January and decided to do some online research.
This is what I've found - and it pretty much sums up the pain I'm experiencing...

Heel Pain: Plantar Fasciitis and Plantar Heel Pain Syndrome
    by Stephen M. Pribut, DPM

“...plantar fasciitis is the most frequently encountered cause of heel pain. ”

Plantar fasciitis is the most frequently encountered cause of plantar heel pain. For many years pain in this region has been incorrectly termed the "heel spur syndrome". It would be better termed a "plantar heel pain syndrome". While heel spurs sound ominous, they can be present and not cause any pain. The formation of a spur is a sign that too much tension has developed within the plantar fascia, and it may have partly torn from its origin at the calcaneus (heel bone). This may result in new bone formation at the site of the injury.

The term plantar fasciitis is derived in part from plantar which refers to the bottom of the foot and from fascia which is a type of dense fibrous connective tissue. The "itis" is a suffix which means inflammation. Latest studies show that in many cases of plantar fasciitis there really is no inflamation, but rather an avascularity ( loss of blood circulation ). This may be similar to what has been termed Achilles Tendinosis (rather then tendinitis). Lemont (2003) has termed it a fasciosis. It is a conceptual difference, but the pain still remains quite similar.

If your foot flattens or becomes unstable during critical times in the walking or running cycle, the attachment of the plantar fascia into your heel bone may begin to stretch and pull away from the heel bone. This will result in pain and possibly swelling. The pain is especially noticeable when you push off with your toes while walking. Since this movement stretches the already injured portion of the fascia. Without treatment the pain will usually spread around the heel. The pain is usually centered at a location just in front of the heel toward the arch. When the tearing occurs at the bone itself, a the bone may attempt to heal itself by producing new bone. This results in the development of a heel spur. Without the spur the condition is called plantar fasciitis.

The pain of this condition may cause you to try to walk on your toes, or alter your running stride and gait which will cause further damage and may cause a problem to develop in your healthy foot. Gait changes in running may also lead to ankle, knee, hip or back pain.

    Related Conditions

    Heel Spur:

A heel spur is a focal point of bone growth on the heel. The bone growth usually extends forward towards the toes. Heel spurs are visible on X-ray. The spur is theorized to occur when the plantar fascia tissue attaching into the calcaneus (heel bone) tears away from the bone and injures the outer layer (periosteum) of the bone. Small amounts of bleeding may occur at this site and then this area can ossify and form a heel spur. It is not the spur that causes the pain, but the continued tension and tearing of tissue at this location.

    Plantar Fascia Rupture:

Tears of the plantar fascia are a less commonly found injury than either a heel spur or plantar fasciitis. They usually involve larger and more abrupt forces than the forces which allow for plantar fasciitis to develop. High speed activity develop these forces more often. The force needs to be applied to the ball of the foot. Sprinting places the foot in a position in which this could happen. Soft shoes that bend in the arch may contribute. Plantar fascia tears may also occur in baseball or softball players when sliding in to a base with the foot making contact with the base. Injections of steroid into the region of the plantar fascia may increase the likelihood of this injury.

The tear usually happens further forward than where the pain of plantar fasciitis usually occurs. It is often found 2 to 4 centimeters in front of the attachment of the plantar fascia into the calcaneus (heel bone). The patient will often recall feeling or hearing a "pop". When examined there may be pain when the toes are passively bent upwards (dorsiflexed). The usual treatment for this injury is non-weight bearing for 1 - 3 weeks in a cast and total casting for about 4 - 6 weeks. Full recovery will take 7 to 12 weeks.

    Nerve Entrapment

A nerve entrapment of the first branch of the lateral plantar nerve may occur in this area and cause a "burning" pain. This is found much less often than the above discussed conditions. The portion of the lateral plantar nerve that leads to the abductor digiti minimi has been mentioned as a possibly involved nerve in some entrapment syndromes (Baxter). Other possible nerve entrapments that may contribute to pain in the heel region include the medial calcaneal nerve and tarsal tunnel nerve entrapment.

    Plantar Fasciitis - Cause:

The most frequent cause is an abnormal motion of the foot called excessive pronation. Normally, while walking or during long distance running, your foot will strike the ground on the heel, then roll forward toward your toes and inward to the arch. Your arch should only dip slightly during this motion. If it lowers too much, you have what is known as excessive pronation. For more details on pronation, please see the section on biomechanics and gait.

The mechanical structure of your feet and the manner in which the different segments of your feet are linked together and joined with your legs has a major impact on their function and on the development of mechanically caused problems. Merely having "flat feet" won't take the spring out of your step, but having badly functioning feet with poor bone alignment will adversely affect the muscles, ligaments, and tendons and can create a variety of aches and pains. Excess pronation can cause the arch of your foot to stretch excessively with each step. It can also cause too much motion in segments of the foot that should be stable as you are walking or running. This "hypermobility" may cause other bones to shift and cause other mechanically induced problems.

Other factors which may contribute to plantar fasciitis and heel spurs include a sudden increase in daily activities, increase in weight (not usually a problem with runners), or a change of shoes. Dramatic increase in training intensity or duration may cause plantar fasciitis. Shoes that are too flexible in the middle of the arch or shoes that bend before the toe joints will cause an increase in tension in the plantar fascia. Make sure your shoes are not excessively worn. These shoes and other shoes that are not sufficiently controlling of pronation combined with an increase in training can lead to this condition. A change in running style, such as starting speed work, running on the ball of your foot or sudden increase in hill workouts.

    Self Treatment

As with most running related injuries, an evaluation of changes in your training should be done. A decrease in workout intensity and duration is important. The most important part of self treatment for this condition is being sure that your shoes offer motion control and are optimal controlling the forces that contribute to plantar fasciitis and heel spurs. Check your running shoes to make sure that they are not excessively worn. They should bend only at the ball of the foot, where your toes attach to the foot. This is vital! Avoid any shoe that bends in the center of the arch or behind the ball of the foot. It offers insufficient support and will stress your plantar fascia. The human foot was not designed to bend here and neither should a shoe be designed to do this.

You should also be doing gentle calf stretching exercises. This will reduce stress on the plantar fascia in two ways. The first manner in which a relaxation of the tension in the calf muscles can help heel pain is that it will reduce the direct pull backwards on the heel bone (calcaneus). The second reason is a little bit more complicated, but essentially it is that a tight achilles tendon and calf muscles causes the rearfoot to move in a manner that causes over pronation as your leg and body move forward over your foot. So go ahead and gently stretch the calf muscle by doing the runner's wall leaning stretch. To strengthen the muscles in your arch toe curls or "doming" can be done. Toe curls may be done by placing a towel on a kitchen floor and then curling your toes to pull the towel towards you. This exercise may also be done without the towel against the resistance of the floor.

Icing after running can also be helpful.

Consider adding over the counter foot supports to your shoes. This should be done after you have first tried a good stability shoe, if you over pronate.

    Self-Treatment Summary:

Self treatment for this problem should include:

    • Temporary decrease in training
    • Gentle Stretching of calf muscles. Wall stretches - 10 seconds each side. Repeat ten times. Do two sets of 10 reps each day.
    • Check shoes for flexion stability. Avoid and replace any shoe that bends before the ball of the foot. Put your flip flops in the closet and forget about them for a very long time.
    • Try wearing shoes that offer more anti-pronation control
    • Perform 20 seconds of "toe curls"three times daily to strengthen your foot muscles.
    • Ice 15 minutes, 10 minute break repeat 1 - 2 times each day
      • Consider rolling your foot over frozen water bottle ( or using frozen peas rather than ice)
    • Carefully examine your training regimen (if you've been keeping a running diary - check it for possible training errors).
    • Do not go barefoot in your house or at any other time for 6 weeks. Also, no slippers, flip flops, open back shoes, sandals that are open in the back without attaching your heel to them.
    • Try over the counter orthotics
    • Visit a sports podiatrist
    • Consider custom orthotics

Treatment is usually succesful for this problem. ECSWT is considered only after the above treatment has failed for 6 months. Orthotics should be tried prior to considering ECSWT (extra-corporeal shock wave therapy) or surgery. If you have hard, rigid orthotics you should try somewhat softer orthotics.

    Bizaro Day

    Today was ummm.... nothing! LOL!

I got up only just before the dancers arrived for their last lesson. The kids were all still asleep in the house!

I taught and then I took Con to a birthday party up the road.

Mark and Ceilidh hosed out the studio, ready for exams tomorrow.

I tidied up the rooms, as did the children and um... that's it!!

Off to Wollongong tonight to watch Katie and Tayla Arnold's dancing concert at their new school. Leaving Boy at home with Mark - it would be a waste to take him, he would fall asleep in the dark theatre! lol

Then studio exams alllllllllllll daaaaaaaaaaaaay long tomorrow *sigh*

    Awards Night! :D

We are just home from the RGDANCE awards night.

Although it was pissing down with rain all day long and all night long (and is still raining) it was a brilliant evening!!

The kids got all dressed up and arrived and walked down the red carpet.

They sat down and listened to all the awards. My three were very very lucky. Ceilidh recieved and 'Outstanding Achievement Certificates' for Tap. Dee received the same thing for Pre-Primary Ballet and Connor received the Pre Jnr Boy's trophy for Excellence!!

Plus CJ and Con got their ballet exam results Im very happy. The examiner was TOUGH and CJ got 69 in G3 and  Con got 70 in Primary. Both were Merit's.

After the awards part it was PARTY TIME!!!!! We were one of the last to leave!! Mummy was too busy dancing with Miss Diana, Miss Jenny, Lisa, Rosemary and Miss R! LOL!

I said to CJ on the way home 'did you see me dancing with the teachers? and she said 'I tried not to' Gee thanks CJ!!

Here are some photos. I hate how they are now so bloody BIG!! Sorry about that!!

The last shot cracks me up - Con was so hot from running around he kept on peeling off layers. That last shot reminds me of Mr Darcy and the wet shirt! ROFL!!
