November 30 St Andrews Day
A bit of History about St. Andrew's Day It is the feast of Saint Andrew, celebrated on 30 November each year. Saint Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland and St. Andrew's Day is Scotland's official national day, although Burns' Night is more widely observed. In 2006, the Scottish Parliament designated the Day as an official bank holiday. In Germany it is celebrated as Andreasnacht (German: St Andrew's Night), in Austria with the custom of Andreasgebet (St Andrew's Prayer) and in Poland as Andrzejki ("Andrews"). In parts of Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Romania, superstitious belief exists that the night before St. Andrew's Day is specially suitable for magic that reveals a young woman's future husband or that binds a future husband to her. Many such customs exist, for example the pouring of hot lead into water (in Poland, one usually pours hot wax from a candle through a key hole into cold water), divining the future husband's profession from the shape of the resulting piece (related divinations using molten metals are still popular in Germany on Hogmanay). In some areas in Austria, young women would drink wine and then perform a spell, called Andreasgebet (Saint Andrew's prayer) while nude and kicking a straw bed. This should magically attract the future husband. Yet another custom is to throw a clog over one's shoulder: if it lands pointing to the door, the woman will get married in the same year. In some parts of Czech Republic and Slovakia, young women would write down the names of potential husbands on little pieces of paper, and stick these into little pieces of dough, called Halusky. When cooked, the first one to float to the surface of the water, would reveal the name of their future husband. In Poland it is popular for women to put pieces of paper (on which they have written the names of boys they fancy) under the pillow and first thing in the morning they take the one out - which reveals the name of the future husband. In Romania it is accustomed for young women to put beneath their pillow 41 grains of wheat, before they go to sleep, and if they dream that someone is coming to steal their grains that means that they are going to get married next year. Also in some other part of the country the young women light a candle from the Easter, and bring it, at midnight, to a fountain. When the water is well lit, they say a prayer to St. Andrew asking them to let them get a glimpse of the face of their future husband. After the prayer is over, usually the water moves and the young women can see the face of their beloved. St. Andrew is also the national saint of Romanians and Romanian Orthodox Church.[7]
What did we do???? (no it wasn't stripping naked and kicking a straw bed!) YOU can WAIT until TOMORROW to SEE!!!!
November 29 A GUY IS A GUYThis is Connor's Tap song. I don't take the kids to dancing on Wednesdays, mum does. So I had no idea that he was doing this song. I got a copy of the music on Thursday from Miss R and I just FELL IN LOVE with this song!!!!!
It's not on in the Matinee show, which is such a shame because Nanna Josephine would love it!! We will just have to wait and show her the DVD!
A GUY IS A GUY
- words and music by Oscar Brand
- adapted from the naughty World War II soldiers' song "A Gob Is A Slob". Brand cleaned up the lyrics. "A Gob Is A Slob" was based on the 1719 British song "I Went To the Alehouse (A Knave Is A Knave)" - lyrics as recorded by Doris Day in 1951 I walked down the street like a good girl should He followed me down the street like I knew he would Because a guy is a guy wherever he may be So listen and I'll tell you what this fella did to me I walked to my house like a good girl should He followed me to my house like I knew he would Because a guy is a guy wherever he may be So listen while I tell you what this fella did to me I never saw the boy before So nothin' could be sillier At closer range his face was strange But his manner was familiar So I walked up the stairs like a good girl should He followed me up the stairs like I knew he would Because a guy is a guy wherever he may be So listen and I'll tell you what this fella did to me I stepped to my door like a good girl should He stopped at my door like I knew he would Because a guy is a guy wherever he may be So listen while I tell you what this fella did to me He asked me for a good-night kiss I said, "It's still good day" I would have told him more except His lips got in the way So I talked to my ma like a good girl should And Ma talked to Pa like I knew she would And they all agreed on a married life for me The guy is my guy wherever he may be So I walked down the aisle like a good girl should He followed me down the aisle like I knew he would Because a guy is a guy wherever he may be And now you've heard the story of what someone did to me And that's what he did to me Addendum - Mum found the song on youtube! THANKYOU MUM! And I've decided that I have to do a highland duo with Brodie and Connor for the Concert next year!! CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW CUTE IT WILL BE!!!!! November 28 School Film Festival! On Tuesday night we went to the MRPS Film Festival. It was a huuuuuge night that started at 5pm and finished at 10pm!!! NO JOKE!!
They had a talent show (CJ did the lilt, and both CJ and Con were in Dancing Fool). They had digital photography from every student in the school. They had craft from every student in the school, They had pixar annimations from EVERY STUDENT IN THE SCHOOL! Plus - they had movies! Every class had done a short film!!
It was a brilliant night!!! :) Ceilidh and Connor were also very excited that Mandy, Kaiesha and Leilani came and watched, as well as Poppa! November 27 Thirteen Things THurdayRANDOM THOUGHTS!
1. My Great Aunt died on Tuesday night. It is very sad, but also a blessing as she had very very bad alseimers and was in a nursing home. The freaky thing is that on Tuesday night her son, Mark, featured in my dream! Only for a moment, but he was definitely there. Now this is not someone whom I see very often. Perhaps once every 2 years. So why oh why would I dream of him, then wake up in the morning, speak to my mother at 8am to find out that Aunty Joyce had died. FREAKUS!
2. I have 5 costumes out of 14 costumes sorted for next weeks concert! arggh!
3. This Sunday we Scottish Dancers are performing with the Wiggles!!! (well -that is an exaggeration - but it sounds good!) We are dancing at the Darling Harbour xmas parade straight after they are performing - so that's close!
4. I nearly let the kids have a sickie today because we're all so tired. But they are having next Friday off, and half of next Thursday - so the guilt got to me!
5. You've never seen two more excited kids that CJ and Con yesterday morning when I said they could have a lunch order for school! They are never allowed lunch orders - mum is too mean! They squealed with delight!!
6. The school had their film festival and school concert on Tues and Wednesday nights. We got to see the kids art and photography and computer items, as well as them dancing in the shows. They were beautiful! I will do a blog about this on its own tomorrow!
7. Darcy told me all the way to Leanne's yesterday morning that she was going to put her head under to swim at lessons yesterday -and Leanne said she did! She didnt stop 'diving and swimming'
8. Can't believe that I only have 9 more days of work before the end of the year! YEEHAAH! (actually I have 11, including my extra 2 Fridays!)
9. Im off to the Oesteopath Uni exams today at 2pm, to be prodded and poked by a student - but hopefully they will 'manipulate' me too! Plus I get 2 free vouchers for volunteerig!
10. Im so proud that thankful to my Mummy for making the most AMAZING Pinnochio outfit you have ever seen!!! I cant wait to take photos of it to show you!! She won't let me yet though!!
11. It is a relief to know that my senior dance student is not sitting her pre-teachers exam in December as it has been stressing me out and I've been most unhappy. Next year and new rules will be much better!
12. I need to organise catch ups with my friends - so Mandina, Danielle, Leanne, Sally, Karin, Tonya - watch out!! Don't know how, but we need to find time to meet for coffee so we can chat and kids can play!
13. Ceilidh went to see the ballet 'The REd Shoes' with mum last night! So they weren't home until 11ish! She was NOT fun this morning! November 26 Weird Sleeping PatternsMy sleeping/waking patterns have been weird recently...
I fall asleep with my book in my hand any time between 11pm and 2am (depending on when I went to bed and how good the book is!)
I wake with the crack of dawn - wide awake and then fall back to sleep, I wake about 30mins later and (of course) have to get up because I need to go to the toilet.
I go back to bed.
Then, when the alarm goes off at 7.30 I am EXHAUSTED and just don't want to get up! This is exactly what happened last night!
I turned off the light around 12.30 last night. Woke with astart at 5am. The light was streaming through the windows, the early birds were awake. I went back into a heavy sleep, not tossing or turning.
5.33 am I wake up - wide awake. Got up to go to the loo, was so awake that I seriously thought to myself 'now this is the time to get fit and go for a walk around the block' - but I went back to bed of course!! Alarm went off at 7.30 and I could barely open my eyes! Now it is 8.24 and even after shower and breakfast Im still all sleep eyed and tired.
WEIRD!! November 25 This post asks an important question (2 actually!)Have you come across big whingers in your life that you had to deal with? What do you think is or would have been the best way to deal with them? Before I go further I would like to make it absolutely clear that like all of us I’m not a perfect human being, in fact I can be quite a pain in the butt to be with. I can be horribly stubborn, eternally pessimistic with occassional over optimism… stuff like that. In short I am a despicable rude b!tch. But before Lord’s angels throw me into hell forever I have definite positive points. I am a PROGRESSIVE. I like building people up. Last but not the least, when I don’t like people (which very often is the case because no one is as good as me! LOL) I leave them alone, rather than spending my time and energy to hurt them, burn with jealousy at their success and pray to Lord for their destruction. (well perhaps I do burn with jealousy at their success, but I am happy for them too!) Why have I posted about this. Well, firstly I've been tired and cranky since yesterday - so it wasn't a good day for me to be 'screwed over' - which is how I felt by the end of last night. Secondly, the 'status update' on the facebook site really annoys me! (see - Im a whinger too!). I like reading about quirky silly things that people may be doing or are going to do etc. But there is one person in particular who constantly WHINGES! It's whine whine whine all the time about how bad her life is and how unlucky she is, and believe me - she isn't! She has beautiful children, no money dramas and a lovely house. Thankfully she doesn't have access to my blog - although if she did she wouldn't think it was about her anyway! lol
Anyway - enough for MY whinge. Im off to work for the day! November 24 ExhaustahmededYesterday was another day in the 'mission'.
Mark and Dad put up CJ's bed. It is looking good! A bit funny seeings as there is no wall there! LOL! The wall is finished. So it's red red red! She has moved most of her stuff from the shared room into hers. Although the books for all three children are still in the back room. I really dont want to get them out again, it's nice not to have bookshelves - a bit more space! But I will...
I moved things about in Dee's room too. Moved the bunks across and got the toys sorted etc. And as I said the other day - the entertainment unit section is done too. Mind you - as all this is being done - the rest of the house has gone to pot. It is disgusting. I haven't even swept or mopped properly in weeks. The bathroom is a shocker too.
There's so many things on my mission list I want to do. I am going to go with Casey's idea and move the computer to upstairs and move the dining room table to down here. So hopefully it wont become a dumping ground and we will actually sit at in and eat! (well that's the intention!). Mark will have to move the cable for optus and get an extension cord or somethign. but he did it for the pay tv so he can do it for the internet, Im sure! I want to go to the Harvey Norman 2nds factory and see if we can get a bathroom vanity to fit the bathroom. our one is literally falling apart. And I know alot of the mess in the bathroom is our doing, but it doesn't help when the furniture is so shocking too.
And all of this doesn't even mention the pool or yard *sigh*
Anyway - here's some pix of 'before and after' with the wall unit and also CJs space!
BEFORE.....
AFTER....
November 23 Twilight!Peetie and I are booked!!
On Dec 11th at 11am we are going GOLD CLASS to see Twilight!!! WOOOHOOOO!!! Very VERY VERY excited!! Not only about seeing the movie, but seeing it in the city, and also seeing it 'posh' and also seeing it with my sis!! BTW - Peta - email me and let me know how much I owe you please! November 22 Have I said it before?Well I 'll say it again!
Mymobile phone is for MY convenience - NOT everyone elses! November 21 Success and Failure of 13 Things Thursday!Well, my 13 things didn't go so well yesterday!
I arrived at Aldi at 9.05, to find that the item I wanted to get for Jacob's birthday was ALREADY sold out!! There were a whole lot of us milling around trying to get it - but alas - were no more! Then yes, I got the paint.
Had a lovely lovely morning tea with Tonya, but arrived late as I couldn't get a parking spot! Headed off to Casula.
Walked into Kmart to get the plastic trolley thing. Thankfully, I asked the lady on the door where I would find them, she said they weren't in yet, but I could raincheck them. So I did - 2 of them. So was still empty handed. Tried to get a cowboy hat there - no luck! Had a lovely lunch with Sally. YUM - Chinese!
Dee wore one of her pretty dresses (forgot to take a photo - sorry!)
Couldn't send Con to cricket as Sam was still sick, and it was probably canceled as it rained on and off all day. (it was lucky I didnt send him, ballet was full on today - and the parents got to watch - wouldn't have been much of a Pinnochio number if Pinnochio was off hitting a red ball around a field!)
Wasn't able to send my slave, opps, my daughter, up to get my coffee when we arrived at dancing because, in my rush to leave the house I forgot my handbag! OPPS! Lucky I wasn't pulled over any time on the way to and from dancing!
Forgot to ring the lady from Scottish House -will do that today!
Didnt get to put away the clothes - well I did add to the piles, but the piles didnt make it into the bedrooms or drawers - another job for today!
I DID get to watch bones and I DID do my washing at mum and dads (well, I put the first load on and my darling dad took it out, stuck it i the dryer {and shrunk Cons RG singlet BTW} and put the 2nd load on for me! Thanks Dad!)
So although I really only got half of my list done for yesterday I still feel I acheived alot - because I wrote it down before hand !LOL
Plus, lots of other good things happened yesterday - 13 more things that I didnt expect or list! 1. My gorgeous friend, Sal said I can have her old washing machine when she moves house next week! THANKS SAL! (mum and dad are thanking you too! LOL)
2. Ceilidh and Connor ran home from school so that Darcy wouldn't be late for dancing!
3. Mark msged to say he will have the full season 1&2 of Sarah Jane Adventures on MP4 next week! woohoo the kids will be stoked! (and so will dad!)
4. I bought a nice top and jeans from Kmart at 40% off!
5. I got to watch Connor's Pinnochio - wow! It was so cool!
6. Mum has almost finished Cons Pinnochio outfit and it looks so very great! (have to colour change his ballets burgandy)
7. Bought a $20 scooter from Aldi - bonus!
8. Mark bought me a surprise huge block of choccie when I got home from dancing.
9. I had time to read at dancing - that usually never happens, even though I take my book every week!
10. I did the 2nd coat of paint on the red wall in what will be CJs room. One step closer!
11. The kids went to bed without a drama - YES YOU READ CORRECTLY!
12. I bought myself a pair of thinning scissors and cut my hair! So now it will last another 6 weeks at least! bonus!
13. I got to have a good chat with Brady at dancing and find out what he has to do/take next week for his one week lock down in the top 100 for So You Think You Can Dance!
So all in all a good Thursday I reckon! November 20 13 Things ThursdayI have stolen this idea from my blog-friend Dani. She does the most wonderful posts that are quirky and funny and also really sad and special.
I thought I would have a go at one of her ideas - 13 THINGS THURSDAY!!
13. Dropping kids at school early so I can go and buy another tin of red paint for Ceilidh's room
12. Heading to Kmart at Casula to get the white plastic wheelie-drawers for Connor's room (and to use at the concert if they are appropriate)
11. Then heading to Aldi to hopefully get Jacob's birthday present that I saw advertised in their brouchure this week.
10. Doing all of the above (with Darcy) by 9.20 so I can be at the cafe in Liverpool at 9.30 to meet Tonya for coffee and catch up!
9. Buying a cowboy hat for Con!
8. Dressing Dee in one of her party dresses, with handbag in tow - as we are actually going somewhere for the day!
7. Remembering to ring the lady from Scottish House to confirm that I have dancers to do her display on St Andrews Day.
6. Hopefully sending Connor off to cricket (as long as Sam is well enough to go - if not Con can go to ballet)
5. Sending my big grown up 9 year old up to the coffee shop for my regular Thursday afternoon cuppachino!
4. Going down to mum and dads to do my washing as the washing machine has died (again)
3. PUTTING AWAY THE CLEAN CLOTHES before they get worn straight from the piles!
2. Watching Bones at 9.30pm
1. Remembering to press 'publish' on this blog when I wake up in the morning (or if Im still up at midnight!) November 19 Chewy lived up to his name today!Grrr - I bought a cake yesterday.
It was only a cheap cake that was on special, but still. I splurged and bought it. I forgot it was in the car last night, and got Ceilidh to bring it in this morning.
She didnt put it on the kitchen bench, she put it on the chair. The dog came in..... About an hour later I went into the studio to get some music and low and behold...
A half eaten cake and a shameful looking dog!
Teach me to splurge..
November 18 Costume peekI got a peek at some of the costumes for the concert this week.
Very cute! Connor is frosty the snowman for the performance group, he is wearing pinnochio outfit mum is making(and it looks awesome!) for ballet, his Boys Jazz is country and western flanno shirt and denim shorts, his Tap he is a BUG (theyre doing Wake Me Up Before You Go Go!) and his Jazz is a 1930's number - and he's wearing knickerbockers and a cravat - HOW CUTE! Oh and soloists routine is just black pants iwth white shirt and black tie (any luck with the black tie Leanne?)
Darcy is wearing these tiny denim stretch shorts and puffy jacket for jazz, tap is circular skirt and crop top and ballet is a tutu.
CJ has a tutu for ballet, a red robin leotard for 'Rockin Robin Tap', White criss crossy outfit for contemporary, emo slashed black tutu for open tap and we dont know what yet for Miss Bec's Jazz.
I paid off the remainder of the costume fees (except for Ceilidh's contemp and jazz as the amounts for those haven't come in yet) It's been a fortune in costumes - about $800 worth for the 3 of them!!!!!!! I am too scared to add it up properly. I hope they get to wear them again! November 17 From the lens of a 4 year oldDarcy has become VERY attached to my old digital camera. It's the 2mpx Fuji one that was the first digi I had. Mark bought it for me and it cost him a bomb.
I dug it out to use as my 'new' samsung is stuffed and I haven't had a chance to return it to the shop as yet.
Dee discovered it and loves taking photos.
She loves taking out to my dancing lessons and snapping the kids in great shots- I am going to put them up on the dancing site. But here are some others that she has taken over the weeks... I love to see how her mind works! She also has taken some of the MESS in the loungeroom and the cupboards which I am actually going to post later, because I can use them to show what I have done with the toy cupboard and tv cupboard! But more of that later! Here is the view of a 4 year old!!! November 16 Meant to be.Mum sent me a link to a utube she found last night.
She went onto utube after reading my blog. So in her mind she was thinking about Ceilidh, Connor, Darcy and Rowan.
She was just browsing and this video below came up. If that wasn't a sign....
This is the syndrome they 'think' Rowan had.

A really nice movie - I recommend it!
Here are some trailers from Utube...
November 12 Week 5 and 7 Weeks! We are already into week 5 at school! Can you believe it! It is great! I'm very happy that there's only 5 weeks left of school - although I'm very sad/scared that my girl is going into 5th class next year & Con will be in 2nd class (unless my threats to repeat him come true! Lol)
There are only 7 weeks until christmas - which is pretty exciting too!
I think I have done most of the xmas shopping. I've not really thought about sorting it out as yet. One of my laybys is paid off- I just owe a few $$$ so that I can keep it at the shop until closer to the day. The other big one still has $150 owing on it, but I think that I won't need to spend any more after that!
The kids know that santa is poorer this year & not bringing as much stuff- we have no where to put it anyway! I'm grateful that Ceilidh is aware enoygh to hear on the news about the worsening economy. I am getting the two older ones smaller santa sacks so it looks like lots of things - cjs current bag is so big that she could be getting a bike & the bag wouldn't be full!! (shes not getting a bike - shes got one!)
Speaking of santa - cj asked me the other day, with the other two in the car, why some families don't believe in santa. I said that lots of families have different beliefs about lots of different things - and changed the subject very quickly! Con was funny though. He had his head down, playing the game boy when she asked me that & you just heard him say ' well who do they THINK the presents come from!!' That was his input to the conversation!
Ahhh the joy of innocence!
Darcy is super dooper excited about christmas this year. I have bought the girls their santa photo dresses - our tradition every year. They are very cute! November 11 I feel lucky!Well, actually, I dont! But I have decided to try my luck and enter all the online competitions I get sent instead of thinking 'oh yes, will do that later and never doing it.'
I have a friend who wins movie tickets and bits and bobs all the time.I've another friend from Canberra who has won THOUSANDS from online competitions.
I know why my Sydney friend (and ACT friend probably) win so much - in those 25 words or less sections she would, I imagine, put the wittiest and funniest little bits of info. I can't do that - not witty or funny.
However, I figure 'ya gotta be in it to win it' so Im going to five it a go! Hopefully it will be $1000's worth of flights or something spectacular like THAT! :) |
